a theater geek if ever there was one
In numerous school, community, and professional theatrical productions, Spencer has served in myriad ways - sometimes as music director, accompanist, pit keyboardist, or composer, and other times as writer, director, actor, and more. Below are just a few theatrical projects Spencer has been involved in, with some additional credits at the bottom.
Spencer and the rest of Vanderbilt Off-Broadway's Artistic Board went all-out for the 2018 mainstage production of Green Day's American Idiot - in a way, by necessity. The show's rebellious, counter-cultural themes were vehemently opposed and even ridiculed by students and faculty alike. As a production under that much scrutiny, it needed to be good. Really good. On January 11th in the Blair School's Ingram Hall, opening night, a near-full house watched as a previously scorned production stood its ground and proved its worth. With 18 individually-programmed projector screens, 20 individually-miked cast members dancing and singing songs full of passion, rage, and love, American Idiot expanded the scope of Vanderbilt student theater and touched communities of students outside the typical Vandy theater crowd. Spencer served as vocal director, rehearsal accompanist, contributing projections videographer/editor, and pit keyboardist in the final performance on January 14th.
interlochen arts camp: evita and catch me if you can
Spencer has worked at Interlochen Arts Camp for two summers as accompanist for the high school musical theater production program, accompanying two productions: Catch Me If You Can (2016) and Evita (2017). For Evita, Spencer was also credited as assistant music director.
During a residency with the Nashville-based dance ensemble New Dialect, Spencer collaborated with a pair of dancers to craft an original piece together, The Wait, which performed as part of Third Voice in various locations in Nashville in early February 2018.
Spencer's music can be heard in the second half of this video taken at Third Voice's installation at Track One.
Shanahan drama club: annie, into the woods, and grease
In 2012, at age 13, Spencer co-founded the Shanahan Drama Club (at Olentangy Shanahan Middle School) and teamed up with director Lisa Andres to put on three musicals and multiple cabarets over the span of several years. Shanahan students auditioned for the shows, which were performed in the Olentangy High School auditorium (both schools in Spencer's district, but schools he did not attend). Once Spencer was accepted into Interlochen Arts Academy, he stepped away from the club. Under new leadership, the Shanahan Drama Club still puts on theatrical productions to this day. Recent productions include The Little Mermaid, The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, The Wonderful Wizard of Neverland, and Bye Bye Birdie.
