Pulling from both his classical and jazz influences, Spencer composed Turnin to capture the bustling, talkative atmosphere of his boys cabin at Interlochen Arts Camp. The hybrid word 'turnin' refers to several things: the way you'd have to turn in place in the tight space of the cabin, the way the piece keeps turning around the circle of fifths (and setting up turnarounds), and the fact that both the piece and the cabin turn in at the end of the night. Turnin was first played and recorded by Interlochen campers in the summer of 2015, and is now played mostly by high school students in concerts and competitions.
